What Happens to Aged Skin? Fresh Data Unveiled

[September 2024 Edition]

New Insights into Skin Ageing with REVIVO BioSystems’ Chronological Ageing Skin Model

Leveraging REVIVO BioSystems’ dynamic skin-on-chip platform, we have developed an advanced Chronological Ageing Skin Model, which offers unique and reliable insights into the aging process and the effects of anti-ageing ingredients and formulations.

What sets this model apart is its non-reliance on traditional methods that would induce oxidative stress. It does not cause inflammation (e.g. IL-1 alpha release) or cell death. This presents a new way of studying skin ageing that does not involve the same mechanisms of damage associated with oxidative stress, and is unique to our dynamic skin-on-chip system.

As we explore further into this non-oxidative pathway for in-vitro skin aging, we continue to uncover valuable data.

Our latest findings have revealed a significant decrease in Collagen I and IV when our aging simulator is applied (see the image below). Collagen I, the most abundant collagen in the skin, provides tensile strength and structural support, while Collagen IV is essential for maintaining the integrity of the basement membrane, anchoring the epidermis to the dermis. The reduction in these key collagen types is a sign of natural skin aging, leading to wrinkles, loss of firmness, and a compromised skin barrier.

These findings closely mirror the natural degradation process seen in aging skin, further validating the relevance of our skin model and making it particularly suitable for anti-aging studies and data generation on collagen stimulation.

Another key aspect that our Chronological Ageing Model can effectively evaluate is the morphological change of the dermis and epidermis. After 3 weeks of culture at the air-liquid interface, the matrix of the in - vitro skin model becomes more translucent due to the thinning of both the epidermis and dermis, which is a direct sign of ageing.
